Back.

Joel in a later photo.

A critical eye pierces a haze of cigarette smoke. The look reveals no clue as to what he thought of your monologue, question, observation, whatever. But the words that followed were always insightful, always thoughtful, often wise and more often than not laced with a sardonic wit. Joel was one of the seminal acting teachers of our class. A sensibility more anchored in the traditional theatre than the heights of the Avant-garde, Joel provided a grounding that was important to the program and to us.

He always took an interest in students as individuals. He always cared. While it surprised many of us when he chose a later career as an Episcapol priest, it makes sense when you think about it. He said it gave him great satisfaction. He was valued by his church colleagues and those to whom he ministered.
